Orange Tofu Recipe: A Delicious Gluten-Free and Vegan Dish

Ingredients
For the Tofu:
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 package firm tofu
- 1/2 cup garbanzo bean flour
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
For the Orange Sauce:
- 1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (approximately 4-5 oranges)
- Zest from one-third of an orange
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
- 2 tablespoons liquid aminos
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (or substitute 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder)
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1-2 tablespoons cornstarch, adjust based on desired thickness
- Optional: sliced leeks or green onions for garnish
Directions
- Prepare the Tofu:
- Heat 1/2 cup of vegetable oil in a cast iron or large pan over medium heat.
- Drain and cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes.
- In a small bowl, combine cornstarch, garbanzo bean flour, garlic powder, and salt.
- Coat the tofu cubes thoroughly with the flour mixture.
- Fry the tofu in the hot oil, turning frequently, until all sides are golden and crispy. Remove and set aside.
- Make the Orange Sauce:
- In a small pot, combine sugar, ginger, minced garlic, rice vinegar, liquid aminos, red pepper flakes, orange juice, and orange zest. Stir over medium-low heat.
- Whisk in 1 tablespoon of cornstarch. If the sauce does not thicken to a syrup-like consistency, whisk in an additional tablespoon of cornstarch.
- Cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes until the sauce reaches the desired thickness.
- Combine and Serve:
- Pour the orange sauce over the crispy tofu.
- Garnish with additional orange zest and optional sliced leeks or green onions.
- Serve the orange tofu hot, ideally over a bed of steamed rice for a complete meal.
