Homemade Bone Broth Recipe with Veggie Scraps
There’s something magical about creating a nutrient-rich, comforting bone broth right at home. With simple ingredients and a little patience, you can craft a versatile broth perfect for sipping, cooking, or even skincare! Here’s my tried-and-true method using cow femur bones from @pointbutchershop and veggie scraps saved over time.
Ingredients
- 1 gallon filtered or spring water
- 6 cow femur bones (from a trusted butcher)
- Veggie scraps (stored in a freezer bag throughout the month)
- Suggestions: carrots, celery, garlic, onions, butternut squash, pearl onions
- Fresh herbs: oregano, thyme, parsley
- Optional spices: cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Broth
- Fill the pot: Add the filtered or spring water to a large stockpot.
- Add bones: Place the femur bones into the pot.
- Include veggies & herbs: Toss in your collected veggie scraps and fresh herbs. For this batch, I used carrots, garlic, pearl onions, and butternut squash.
- Season: Add a sprinkle of cayenne pepper for a warming kick, along with any other spices you prefer.
Step 2: Cook the Broth
- Boil: Bring the mixture to a rapid boil.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat and let it simmer gently for about 3 hours. The longer it simmers, the richer the broth becomes.
Step 3: Strain & Store
- Cool: Allow the broth to cool slightly.
- Strain: Use a fine mesh strainer to separate the liquid from the bones and veggies.
- Store: Pour the broth into 4-5 mason jars (32 oz each).
- Refrigerate: Store in the fridge. You’ll notice the tallow harden on top—this can be used for cooking or even as a facial cream!

Tips & Variations

- Custom Flavors: Add ginger, turmeric, or lemongrass for unique flavor profiles.
- Storage: Broth can be frozen for long-term use—just leave room in the jar for expansion.
