Creating a Bee-Friendly Garden Floor with Moss, Alyssum & Wildflowers

Last year, I decided to change out our decomposed granite floor to flagstone. I turn the often-overlooked gaps between my flagstone garden path into something truly special: a soft, blooming, bee-friendly garden floor. Not only does it look beautiful and natural, but it also helps support pollinators—win-win!

Here’s how I did it and what I used:

1. Preparing the Gaps Between the Stones I started by gently clearing out any weeds or debris from between the flagstone. I loosened the top layer of soil to give my new plants a little breathing room and help them root more easily. If your path has compacted dirt or gravel, you can amend it with a bit of compost or potting mix to encourage growth.

2. Planting Sun-Tolerant Moss Clumps For softness and that lush, aged-garden look, I tucked in small clumps of sun-tolerant moss. These work beautifully in full or partial sun and create a plush, green carpet over time. I spaced them throughout the path where I wanted a more natural, seamless feel.

3. Adding Alyssum for Flowers and Bees In between the moss, I planted clusters of alyssum—one of my favorite low-growing flowers. It smells sweet, fills in quickly, and bees absolutely love it. Alyssum also drapes beautifully over the edges of the stones, adding a soft, romantic vibe to the space.

4. Sprinkling “Save the Bees” Wildflower Seeds And because I love a good surprise (and so do the bees), I scattered “Save the Bees” wildflower seed mix in the remaining gaps. These seeds produce a variety of small, pollinator-friendly flowers that pop up in different shapes, heights, and colors. Each week, I notice new little blooms peeking through the stones, making the garden floor feel alive and ever-changing.

5. Watering and Maintenance I kept the area moist while everything was establishing, especially during the first couple of weeks. Now, I give it a gentle spray every few days and keep an eye out for any weeds trying to sneak in. Other than that, it’s incredibly low-maintenance—and incredibly rewarding.

This garden floor has quickly become one of my favorite little design touches. It’s functional, aesthetic, and supports the environment in a simple, beautiful way. Whether you’re creating a new path or refreshing an old one, adding a mix of moss, alyssum, and wildflowers is a fun, easy way to bring more magic (and bees!) into your space.

Happy planting! 🌿🐝
